I love my CGM!

As you may be aware there is a lot of activity on social media regarding subsidy of Continuous Glucose systems in Australia. We know they work and help people with type 1 Diabetes manage their diabetes and it keep you safe from severe hypo events- but I actually had this experience on Friday night.

I play in a Bluegrass band called the Kissin Cousins. We had travelled up to perform at a festival in Dorrigo, NSW. After our show Friday night, I had a Pie and a Beer, and within 2 hours found myself feeling very unwell. We headed back to the motel we were staying at which was localed about 10mins out of Town. The little town was Dorrigo, about 1hrs drive from Coffs Harbour. By the time we got back to the motel I was vomiting and feeling very ordinary. Lying on the bed my pump started vibrating and alarming- my low suspend had kicked in. Checking my BG was the last thing on my mind, let alone thinking about being hypo and then needing to suspend my pump! It was done for me all thanks to my CGM. It continued to keep me suspended for about an hour- during this time my BG was about 2.1mmol/L and I was seriously considering getting my husband to call an ambulance. I was pretty scare at this stage- 'Give it another 20mins' I said to him, then I'm out- call the ambos. I sucked on Jelly beans and my next BG was 5.2mmol/L- still not keeping anything down I resumed my pump and ran at a 50% Temp basal rate- knowing that if required my low SUSPEND would kick in again. Peace of mind!! I really do appreciate my CGM so much more now.

We can show all the reasearch in the world to the politicians but it is real life situations like this. Everyday life with Diabetes! Everyone should have access to this technology- Today I am grateful that I have access to it at all!
